Best Time for a Washington DC Day Trip from NYC: Weather, Crowds & Cherry Blossoms

October is the best overall month for a Washington DC day trip from New York, with comfortable weather for a day on foot around the National Mall and fewer visitors at the memorials than in spring.

If your dates are already fixed, the date checker below shows whether day trips run that day, any holiday closures, the forecast or usual weather, and the time of sunset.

Updated October 2026

The short answer

Day trips from New York to Washington are available year-round, although from November to mid-March some tours run on fewer days of the week, and most do not run on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. The weather makes the biggest difference to the day, especially summer heat and winter cold, because much of your time in Washington is spent walking outdoors between memorials, on the tour’s schedule.

If your dates are flexible, October offers the best overall balance. Highs average about 69°F, comfortable for walking, and the Lincoln Memorial is busy but less crowded than in spring. September is a close second, although its first weeks can still be hot and humid.

The cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin are usually at their best between mid-March and early April, and spring is the busiest season for visitors to the Lincoln Memorial. A standard day trip passes the Tidal Basin only briefly, so if the blossoms are your reason for going, check what your tour includes.

From June to August Washington is hot and humid, with July highs around 90°F. If your tour offers a choice, take the earliest departure so more of the walking comes before the afternoon heat, and carry water.

For smaller crowds, December to February are much quieter for visitors to the Lincoln Memorial, but highs average in the 40s°F, so dress warmly. Whatever the month, check the forecast the day before for heat, thunderstorms or snow, because the memorials have little shelter.

Month by month in Washington

Washington’s year moves in a fixed order, even though the dates shift a little. Spring starts cool: March highs average in the upper 50s°F, and the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin usually reach peak bloom between mid-March and early April, when school groups and blossom visitors make it the busiest time at the memorials. April and May are mild to warm and still busy. Summer is hot and humid from June to August, with long evenings. September starts warm and cools through the month, and October is mild, with highs near 70°F. November turns cool, and from December to February highs are in the 40s°F, the occasional snowfall dusts the Mall, and the memorials are at their quietest.

The temperatures are long-term averages at Reagan National Airport, just across the Potomac from the National Mall, so read them as a way to compare months rather than a forecast for your day. A day with rain or snow means at least 0.01 inch, so most of those days are not washouts. The visit counts are the National Park Service’s own figures for the Lincoln Memorial, a stop on the guided day trips from New York; they count everyone at the memorial, not people on tours.

October and April are the two months when highs sit in the upper 60s°F, which is comfortable for a few hours on foot. October is the quieter of the two at the memorials, while April has the spring green and, in some years, the last of the cherry blossoms.

Other experiences you might enjoy

From New York you can also pair Washington with Philadelphia, stay a night for the Smithsonian museums, or add a monuments by night tour or a cherry blossom bike tour.

Cherry blossom season

The National Park Service defines peak bloom as the day when 70% of the Yoshino cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin are open. The long-term average date is around April 4, but in recent years it has mostly come in the second half of March: March 20 in 2020, March 21 in 2022, March 23 in 2023 and March 26 in 2026. The Park Service has recorded it as early as March 15 and as late as April 18. The blossoms usually stay out for several days to about a week after peak, less if it turns windy or wet, and the Park Service publishes its peak bloom forecast in early March. In 2026 the National Cherry Blossom Festival ran from March 20 to April 12.

The blossom season falls in the busiest season of the year at the memorials. In 2024 the Lincoln Memorial had about 900,000 visits in each of March and April, more than in any summer month, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the Tidal Basin had its busiest month of the year in March. Book a day trip early for the bloom weeks.

A standard day trip from New York gives the Tidal Basin very little time: the most-reviewed one passes the Jefferson Memorial for about five minutes on its way to Arlington. If the blossoms are the main reason for your trip, the train gives you the freedom to walk the Tidal Basin, or you can stay a night and join the cherry blossom bike tour in Washington, which runs during the blossom season.

Summer heat and thunderstorms

From June to August Washington is hot and humid. July highs average about 90°F, and an average July has about 15 days of 90°F or more; August has about 11 and June about 8. On a day trip much of the time in Washington is spent walking outdoors between memorials and at Arlington National Cemetery, with little shade on the long walk beside the Reflecting Pool, so the heat is the main thing to plan around.

Several day trips from New York, including the most-reviewed one, offer departures at 6, 7 or 8 a.m. With about four and a half hours on the road including a breakfast stop, the 6 a.m. coach reaches Washington mid-morning, so more of the guided walking comes before the hottest part of the afternoon. Carry water and a hat, and use the free time on the Mall for an air-conditioned Smithsonian museum. On a day when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory for Washington, take the earliest departure you can and plan the free time indoors.

Summer afternoons can also bring thunderstorms. The memorials have little shelter, so watch the forecast on the morning of your trip and follow your guide’s lead if lightning is near. Summer has its own advantages: the evenings are long, with sunset after 8 p.m. from mid-May to mid-August.

Independence Day is a special case. The National Park Service closes parts of the National Mall and the roads around the Lincoln Memorial for the celebrations and fireworks, and the Washington Monument is closed on July 4, so expect tour routes to change around the holiday.

Winter: December to February

Winter is the quiet season at the memorials. In 2024 the Lincoln Memorial had about 370,000 visits in January and 460,000 in December, well under half of the spring months. The cost is the cold: highs average in the 40s°F, nights fall below freezing on about 13 to 20 nights a month, and the walk at Arlington and along the Reflecting Pool can feel colder in the wind, so dress in warm layers. Reagan National averages about 5 inches of snow in each of January and February. If snow is forecast, check with your operator before you travel and read the cancellation terms of your booking.

The days are short. The sun sets around 4:45 p.m. in early December and around 5:10 p.m. in mid-January, so the end of the day in Washington is in twilight or dark. The memorials stay open after dark and are lit, which is one advantage of a winter trip. Most Smithsonian museums on the Mall are open every day except December 25 and make a warm place to spend the free time.

Day trips from New York are available through the winter, but some run fewer days a week. When we checked the calendars on October 23, 2026, the most-reviewed day trip had no departures on Sundays from November to mid-March, and none of the four day trips we looked at ran on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. Three of the four skipped Christmas Eve, and two skipped Thanksgiving Day. Our guide to a winter day trip from NYC covers what to wear, what you can see in the short daylight, and the train or a night in Washington as alternatives, and the single months have their own pages for December, January and February.

How busy are the memorials?

The Lincoln Memorial had about 8.5 million visits in 2024. March and April were the busiest months, at about 900,000 each, followed by May and June at about 850,000. Summer stayed busy, at about 780,000 to 820,000 a month. September was the quietest month between March and October, at about 690,000, and October had about 770,000. November fell to about 630,000, and December and January were the quietest, at about 460,000 and 370,000.

The pattern was the same in 2022, 2023 and 2025: each year, spring had more visits than summer, October had fewer visits than April, and December to February were the quietest. The 2025 figures are also affected by the federal government shutdown of October and November 2025, when some sites on the Mall closed. These counts measure everyone at the Lincoln Memorial, so they show the shape of the year rather than how full a particular tour will be.

Check your date

Choose a date to see whether day trips from New York usually run that day, any holiday closures in Washington, the cherry blossom season, the weather on the National Mall (the forecast for the next 16 days, or the long-term averages further ahead) and the time of sunset. In general, July highs average about 90°F, December to February are cold and much quieter at the memorials, and the cherry blossoms usually peak between mid-March and early April.

Forecasts come from Open-Meteo, and alerts from the National Weather Service. Averages are NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Washington Reagan National Airport, across the river from the National Mall, and are not a forecast. Sunset is calculated for the Mall.

Choosing a tour and departure time for your month

Most guided day trips from Manhattan take 14 to 15 hours, with about four and a half hours on the road each way. The guided day trip by van or bus, rated 4.6 from more than 4,600 reviews, walks Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam and Korean War memorials, then gives you 90 minutes of free time on the Mall for a museum. Its three morning departures matter most in summer, when the 6 a.m. coach puts more of the walking before the afternoon heat.

The Washington highlights one-day tour, rated 4.7 from more than 550 reviews, also leaves at 6, 7 or 8 a.m. The day trip by bus from New York has a 4.7 rating from about 600 reviews, but its calendar had fewer departure days in November and December. In every season, check the calendar for your date. Compare every departure, or read how a Washington day trip from NYC compares with the train.

Choosing the month for a wider New York trip

If Washington is one day of a longer New York trip, October works for both cities: Central Park highs average about 65°F that month. Washington runs about five degrees warmer than Manhattan through most of the year, with July highs of about 90°F against about 85°F in Central Park, so a warm day in New York is usually a hotter one on the Mall.

Weather. NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, U.S. Climate Normals 1991 to 2020, for Washington Reagan National Airport (USW00013743), about three miles south of the National Mall on the Virginia side of the Potomac. Average highs and lows, days with a high of 90°F or more, days with at least 0.01 inch of precipitation, nights at or below 32°F and snowfall are the normals’ own monthly values, read on October 23, 2026.

Sunset and daylight. Calculated for the National Mall with the NOAA solar equations, for mid-month in 2027 with daylight saving time applied. They agree with published tables to within a few minutes.

Visitors. National Park Service Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) statistics, recreation visits by month for the Lincoln Memorial (2022 to 2025) and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial (2024), read on October 23, 2026. They count all visits to the memorial, not people on any tour. Some 2025 months are affected by the federal government shutdown of October 1 to November 12, 2025.

Cherry blossoms. National Park Service peak bloom definition, forecast and record dates (earliest March 15, 1990; latest April 18, 1958), with recent peak dates and the 2026 festival dates as reported by local news citing the Park Service. The average of about April 4 is the long-term figure the EPA reports from the Park Service records.

Holidays and closures. National Park Service public notices for the 2026 Independence Day closures on the National Mall; the Washington Monument’s published 2026 closure dates; Smithsonian opening hours as given on this site’s museum guide.

Tours. GetYourGuide listings and calendars for the four day trips named on this page, read on October 23, 2026: ratings, review counts, departure times, itinerary, cancellation terms and which dates had departures. Calendars change, so check the one for your date.

What these figures cannot tell you. The temperatures and wet days are long-term averages at one airport station, not a forecast for your day. The visit counts are one memorial’s monthly totals and cannot say how busy a given tour will be. Peak bloom moves from year to year. No monthly price series exists for these day trips, so this page makes no cheapest-month claim.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for a Washington DC day trip from New York?

If you can choose, October offers the best overall balance. Highs in Washington average about 69°F, comfortable for a day of walking between the memorials, and the Lincoln Memorial had about 770,000 visits in October 2024 against about 900,000 in April. September is a close second, although its first weeks can still be hot and humid.

When is the best time to visit Washington DC to avoid crowds?

December to February. In 2024 the Lincoln Memorial had about 370,000 visits in January, 470,000 in February and 460,000 in December, against about 900,000 in each of March and April. The catch is the cold: highs average in the 40s°F, and the sun sets before 5 p.m. in December.

When do the cherry blossoms bloom in Washington DC?

The National Park Service defines peak bloom as the day when 70% of the Yoshino cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin are open. It usually falls between mid-March and early April: in 2026 it came on March 26. The blossoms usually stay out for several days to about a week after peak, less if it turns windy or wet. The Park Service publishes its forecast in early March.

Can I see the cherry blossoms on a day trip from NYC?

Yes, but a standard day trip from New York passes the Tidal Basin only briefly, and the bloom falls in the busiest season of the year at the Lincoln Memorial, so book early. If the blossoms are the main reason for your trip, the train gives you more time at the Tidal Basin, or you can stay a night and join a cherry blossom tour in Washington.

How hot is Washington DC in summer?

Hot and humid. July highs average about 90°F, and an average July has about 15 days of 90°F or more; June and August are close behind. Much of a day trip is spent walking outdoors, so carry water and a hat, take the earliest departure if your tour offers one, and use the free time for an air-conditioned museum.

Do day trips from New York to Washington run in winter?

Yes. Day trips are available through the winter, but some run fewer days a week: the most-reviewed one did not run on Sundays from November to mid-March when we checked its calendar. None of the four day trips we looked at had departures on Christmas Day, New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, three of the four skipped Christmas Eve, and two skipped Thanksgiving Day.

Is Washington DC worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you are happy with cold days. December to February are much quieter at the memorials, but highs average in the 40s°F and the sun sets before 5 p.m. in December, so the end of the day is in twilight. Most Smithsonian museums on the Mall are open every day except December 25 and are warm places for the free time.
