Is a Washington DC day trip from NYC worth it in December?

A December day trip from New York to Washington: sunset before 5 p.m., cold memorial stops, the National Christmas Tree, Christmas Day closures and tour vs train vs a night in DC.

Updated October 2026

The U.S. Capitol dome and the American flag against a clear winter-blue sky

Yes, a December day trip from New York works if you go for the monuments and the Smithsonian and accept a short, cold afternoon. The sun sets around 4:45 p.m., so a guided tour from Manhattan covers the big landmarks in daylight and is on the road home before the Christmas lights matter. Take an early train and a late one back if the National Christmas Tree after dark or a long museum visit is the point, and avoid December 25, when all four Smithsonian museums on the Mall close and the day trips do not run. December is one month of our winter day-trip guide, which covers November to February.

What Washington is like in December

December in Washington is usually chilly, with crisp sunny days, rain, wind and the odd wintry spell. Snow is possible but not something to plan around. The bigger everyday problem is wind and time outdoors: the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial steps and Arlington National Cemetery are all exposed.

Planning factorWhat to expect in December
Average high and lowAbout 49°F (9°C) by day and 35°F (2°C) at night, with colder spells
SnowPossible, but a snowy Christmas scene is not guaranteed
SunsetAbout 4:46 p.m. in the first half of the month, about 4:56 p.m. by December 31
CrowdsVary with the weekday, holiday events and Christmas and New Year travel
Smithsonian museumsFree and open daily except December 25; the Air and Space Museum needs a free timed pass
Tour departuresNo Sunday departures on the most-reviewed trip, and none on December 25 or 31

On a clear day the memorials look sharp in the low winter light, and a mild afternoon is pleasant for walking. The catch is the timing. A guided day spends about four and a half hours on the road each way, so the tour is in Washington from late morning to late afternoon and leaves around dusk, before the evening light displays are worth seeing.

Is December a good month for a day trip from New York?

December suits you if:

  • You are spending several days in New York and want to add the capital without changing hotels.
  • The White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and the other memorials are your main priorities, seen from outside.
  • You are fine with a very early start and a late return, 14 to 15 hours in all on a guided tour.
  • You can dress for the cold and keep the plan flexible.
  • A museum stop appeals if the weather turns.

Stay a night instead if:

  • Seeing the National Christmas Tree lit after dark is essential.
  • You want a Christmas market, a ticketed evening light show and more than one museum.
  • You are travelling with young children or with someone who finds long walks hard.
  • You would like dinner in Washington instead of a long drive back to Manhattan.

A day trip gives you the highlights, not the whole city. With one day, choose a few stops you care about and let the others go.

Getting from New York to Washington in December

A guided day tour from Manhattan

A guided trip bundles the drive south and the main landmarks into one booking. Many itineraries cover the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and other National Mall stops from outside; some add Arlington or free time for a museum. Departures from Midtown are at 6:00, 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. on the most-booked tours.

In December you skip the trains, the local transport and the planning of each stop in the cold. You also get a fixed schedule, limited museum time and a departure from Washington before the holiday displays are lit.

The day trips that run in December:

  1. The van or bus day trip from NYC, $107, rated 4.6/5 from more than 4,600 reviews, the most-reviewed day trip from New York. It walks Arlington and the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean War memorials, stops outside the White House and the Capitol, and ends with 90 minutes of free time on the National Mall (tour breakdown).
  2. The Washington highlights tour, $108, rated 4.6/5 from 557 reviews, with an hour at Arlington, the main memorials and 90 minutes on the Mall (tour breakdown).
  3. The day tour with free time for museums, $114, rated 4.4/5 from 51 reviews, a smaller listing with a similar route and 90 minutes for a Smithsonian museum (tour breakdown).

Read each listing to see which sights you go inside and which you only pass. A photo stop outside the Capitol is not a Capitol tour, and a view of the White House is not a White House visit.

Amtrak on your own

Amtrak links Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station with Washington Union Station. The Northeast Regional takes about 3 hours 20 to 3 hours 30 minutes and Acela about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours, and fares change with the date and how early you book.

Take the train if you want an hour or two inside a Smithsonian museum, a timed ticket for a specific sight, or an evening among the lights before a late train home. You plan your own way from Union Station to the sights, and you should leave a generous margin for the return train.

Check times and fares on Amtrak. Our train vs bus vs tour comparison sets the three side by side, and the train guide has a sample day with departure and return times.

An intercity bus on your own

An intercity bus can be cheap if you book early, but it spends about four and a half hours or more on the road each way, depending on the route, traffic and weather. Around the holidays, traffic can eat a big part of your sightseeing time.

The bus suits a tight budget and a short list of sights. It is a poor fit if you are trying to squeeze in museum reservations or an evening Christmas event.

What you can see in one December day

The Lincoln Memorial and the Reflecting Pool

The Lincoln Memorial works in every month. The steps, the columns and the view down the Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument make it one of the most memorable stops in the city. In December the area can be windy; take care on wet or icy steps.

The White House from outside

Many day tours from New York stop for an outside view of the White House from a public viewing area. The exact viewpoint can change for security or events. A public White House interior tour is not included on the day trips.

The U.S. Capitol from outside

The Capitol photographs well under clear winter skies, and an outside stop fits most guided itineraries. A tour inside needs separate booking and time: the Capitol Visitor Center is closed on Sundays and Christmas Day. Our Capitol tours guide explains how to book one.

The war memorials on the National Mall

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the World War II Memorial sit close together and make a moving group on a monuments day. All three are outdoors, so allow for the cold and the walking.

The Smithsonian museums

A museum gives you a warm break in December. Good choices are the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of American History and the National Air and Space Museum, all free and open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Air and Space Museum on the Mall needs a free timed-entry pass. All four Smithsonian museums on the Mall close on December 25; check the Smithsonian’s hours and entry rules before you go.

A sightseeing tour may give you little or no museum time. If a Smithsonian visit is the heart of your plan, compare the tour with free time for museums with a day on your own by train, and see our guide to the Smithsonian museums in one day.

Christmas lights, markets and the National Christmas Tree

You can see some of the lights and events, but only if your arrival, the event and your way home line up. The monuments and the holiday events are not on one compact circuit, and the day tours are not planned around the lights.

The National Christmas Tree

The 2026 National Christmas Tree Lighting is on Thursday, December 3, 2026, on the Ellipse south of the White House. Tickets are free through a National Park Service lottery that runs October 28 to November 4, 2026, with winners told on November 12. Entering the lottery does not guarantee a ticket.

After the ceremony, you can usually walk up to the lit tree and the state and territory trees around it through the holiday season. Check the posted hours and any security arrangements. The tree after dark is not part of a daytime tour from New York, which leaves Washington around dusk.

Official information: the National Park Service’s National Christmas Tree page and the 2026 ceremony lottery.

The DowntownDC Holiday Market

A holiday market is a pleasant addition to a day on your own, for lunch, gifts or a break from the monuments. The organiser lists the 2026 DowntownDC Holiday Market from November 13 to December 23, 2026, open noon to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, with hours that may change. Check the DowntownDC Holiday Market page close to your date. It closes two days before Christmas.

On a guided day tour, a market visit only happens if the itinerary names it or your free time stretches that far.

Enchant Christmas at Nationals Park

Destination DC lists Enchant Christmas at Nationals Park from November 20 to December 27, 2026, closed on November 26. Evening entry times change by day: on Tuesdays and Wednesdays it opens about 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Fridays and Saturdays about 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. It is a separate ticket and does not fit most day tours from Manhattan. It suits you if you stay a night in Washington or take a late train home. See the official Washington tourism listing.

ZooLights

The National Zoo’s light show appeals to families, but it is a few miles north of the National Mall and runs in the evening. The zoo lists ZooLights from November 20, 2026, to January 3, 2027, from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. General admission costs $10, children 2 and under go free, and parking is extra. After the drive or the train from New York, it only fits with a night in Washington or a late train home. Check the nights around Christmas on the ZooLights page before you plan around it.

A holiday lights tour for a night in Washington

If you stay over, the Holiday Lights Nighttime Bus Tour, from $69, rated 4.2/5 from 84 reviews, is a three-hour evening tour of the decorated city and the memorials. It is rated lower than the day trips, so read the recent reviews before you book. For the lit memorials without the Christmas theme, the Monuments by Moonlight trolley tour ($60, 4.6/5 from more than 1,600 reviews) leaves from Union Station. Our night tours guide compares the evening options.

A December sightseeing day and a Christmas-lights trip need different plans. Decide which one you want before you choose how to travel.

Sample December days from New York

These are example plans, not fixed tour schedules or train departures. Confirm your own services and entry times.

A guided monuments day

Part of dayPlan

Late morning to early afternoonArlington and the memorials, depending on the route you booked
AfternoonPhoto stops outside the White House and the Capitol, then free time on the Mall
Around duskLeave Washington for the drive back to New York, about four and a half hours

Good for: first-time visitors who want an easy overview and can manage a long day. Not for: an evening among the lights or several museums.

Museums and monuments by Amtrak

Part of dayPlan
Early morningLeave New York on a train you booked ahead
Late morningArrive at Union Station and head to Capitol Hill or the National Mall
MiddayOne Smithsonian museum, with time for lunch
AfternoonWalk or take a taxi or the Metro to two or three of the main memorials
From about 4:45 p.m.Optional: the National Christmas Tree after dark, if its hours and your train allow
EveningTrain back to New York

Good for: travellers who want flexibility and prefer a museum to a long list of photo stops. Avoid booking several timed tickets unless your day has plenty of slack.

A relaxed two-day Christmas visit

Day 1: arrive by train or on a two-day tour, see Capitol Hill and a Smithsonian museum, have dinner and see the lights after dark.

Day 2: see the White House from outside, the Lincoln Memorial and the rest of the National Mall before heading back to New York.

Good for: families, photographers, market lovers and anyone who wants Washington at night without racing back to a departure point. Our two-day trip guide compares the two-day tours and a night on your own.

Christmas and New Year dates to check

The best-time guide’s date checker shows whether day trips run on your exact day. The pattern for December 2026:

December 1 to 20: regular sightseeing with the holiday atmosphere

The first three weeks combine ordinary sightseeing with the Christmas events. Weekdays are often easier for museums and memorials than event dates; the most-reviewed day trip does not run on Sundays from November to mid-March, so Saturday is the only weekend day for it.

December 21 to 24: allow for holiday travel

This is a busy travel week. Train fares can be higher, the roads south can be congested, and some operators change their timetables. Book early and confirm your way home. On Christmas Eve, December 24, three of the four day trips we checked did not run, so check your tour for that date.

December 25: a Christmas Day trip from NYC

Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. You can go, but only by train, and only for the outdoor sights. None of the day trips we checked runs from New York that day, so a guided Christmas Day tour is not an option.

On December 25, 2026Open or closed
Lincoln Memorial, the war memorials and the other outdoor memorials on the MallOpen; the National Park Service keeps them open 24 hours
The National Christmas Tree and the state and territory trees on the EllipseUsually open to walk past; check the posted hours and security notices
The Smithsonian museumsClosed; Christmas Day is their one closed day of the year
The Washington MonumentClosed
Ford’s TheatreClosed; the National Park Service closes it on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day
The Capitol Visitor CenterClosed
DowntownDC Holiday MarketClosed; the 2026 market ends on December 23
Day trips from New YorkNone of the four we checked runs
Restaurants, cafés and local transportHoliday hours; book a meal ahead

A holiday market and a museum both sound like Christmas in Washington, but on December 25 both are closed, so do not make a Christmas Day trip for either.

A train seat does not mean the sights are open. On Christmas Day, plan a walk around the outdoor memorials, the White House from outside and the National Christmas Tree, with warm clothes and food arranged, because there are few places to warm up. Book your return train before you go, and check Amtrak’s holiday timetable for that date.

Sources for these closures: the Smithsonian’s hours, the National Mall hours and Ford’s Theatre hours from the National Park Service, and the DowntownDC Holiday Market page.

December 26 to January 1: check the schedules again

The museums return to their normal hours after Christmas, the tours run again on their usual days and the holiday market has already closed. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day have no day trips.

Washington or New York for Christmas?

The two cities give you different holidays. Stay in New York if the trip is mainly about Rockefeller Center, the window displays, Bryant Park and Broadway; a day in Washington costs you about nine hours of travel.

Go to Washington if the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol and the White House are what you want to add to your New York stay, and the decorations are a bonus. Stay a night in Washington if the National Christmas Tree lit up and the evening light shows matter as much as the memorials.

Make the trip for Washington itself; its Christmas show is not bigger than New York’s.

What to wear for a December day in Washington

Dress for several hours outdoors, even with a heated coach or train between the cities:

  • A warm, wind-resistant coat with room for layers.
  • A sweater or fleece over a breathable base layer.
  • Comfortable, water-resistant walking shoes with grip.
  • Gloves, a scarf and a warm hat.
  • A compact umbrella or a waterproof layer.
  • A small bag with water, snacks, a phone charger and any medication.

You feel much colder standing at a memorial than sitting on the bus. Wear shoes that handle steps, uneven paths and wet or icy patches, and check the Washington forecast a day or two before you go, because December changes from day to day.

What a December day trip costs

Tour prices, train fares and bus fares change with the date, how early you book and what is left, so compare the whole day and not only the fare.

Decide what you need to see first. A cheap bus fare is poor value if it leaves you only a few hours in the city, and a guided tour is poor value if your main plan is half a day in a free museum. Our cost and budget breakdown adds up the whole day for each way of travelling.

If it snows or rains

A rainy December day is not a reason to cancel: museums, warm clothes and a shorter walk keep the day enjoyable. Snow, ice and winter storms are different. They can slow the roads and the trains, change a tour and close outdoor areas.

Before you travel:

  1. Check your train or tour operator’s service alerts.
  2. Check the Washington forecast, not only the weather in Manhattan.
  3. Look over any timed museum reservations.
  4. Read the tour’s cancellation, rebooking and weather policy.
  5. Keep the plan loose enough to drop a stop without missing your way home.

A snowy forecast does not cancel a tour by itself. Policies differ, and a train or road delay does not always earn a free refund.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Washington DC from NYC in one day in December?

Yes, on a guided day tour or with an early train and a late one back. Expect a long day with limited time in the city, and choose the monuments or one museum instead of trying to cover everything.

Does Washington DC get snow in December?

Sometimes, but a snowy December day is not guaranteed. Rain, cold wind and chilly days are more likely. Check the forecast close to your date.

Are Washington DC tours from New York available in December?

Yes, on most days. The most-reviewed day trip has no Sunday departures from November to mid-March, and the day trips do not run on December 25 or December 31. Check your exact date before you book, especially around Christmas.

Can I visit the Smithsonian museums in December?

Yes. The Smithsonian museums are open every day in December except December 25. Admission is free, but the Air and Space Museum needs a free timed-entry pass.

Can I see the National Christmas Tree on a NYC day trip?

Only on your own. The tree is best after dark, from about 4:45 p.m., and the day tours leave Washington around dusk. A train with an evening return or a night in Washington gives you the time.

Is December too cold to visit the Lincoln Memorial?

Not if you dress for it. The memorial is open and worth the stop in every month, but the National Mall is windy and exposed, so wear warm layers and shoes with grip.

Is Amtrak better than a guided tour in December?

The train is better for museum time and the evening lights. A guided tour is better for a planned route through the highlights with no logistics. Compare the departure and return times, not only the price.

Can I visit Washington DC from NYC on Christmas Day?

You can go by train if one runs, but the day trips do not run on December 25, and all four Smithsonian museums on the Mall, the Washington Monument and the Capitol Visitor Center close. Check transport, food and each sight you plan to visit.

Are the Christmas markets in Washington open on Christmas Day?

Not the DowntownDC Holiday Market: it runs from November 13 to December 23, 2026, so it is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Check any other market’s own dates before you plan around it.

Do I need tickets for the National Christmas Tree Lighting?

Yes, for the ceremony on December 3, 2026. Tickets are free through a lottery that closes on November 4. Walking past the lit tree later in the season needs no ticket.

Is ZooLights open over Christmas?

ZooLights runs from November 20, 2026, to January 3, 2027, in the evening, with $10 tickets. Check the nights around December 24 and 25 on the zoo’s page. It suits a night in Washington better than a day trip.

Can you see the monuments at night on a trip from NYC?

Yes, on your own: the outdoor memorials on the Mall are open 24 hours. The day tours leave around dusk, so take a late train home or stay a night. Our night tours guide compares the evening tours.

Is it better to stay overnight in Washington in December?

Stay a night if you want the lights after dark, several museums or a slower pace. A day trip is enough if you mainly want the monuments and cannot spare two days away from New York.

Should you go to Washington in December?

Go if you plan around the short daylight and keep the list short. For first-time visitors who want the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and the National Mall, a guided December day trip is an efficient addition to a New York stay. For museum lovers, or if the Christmas decorations are the reason to go, the train or a night in Washington fits better.

Pick the one thing that matters most and leave room for winter weather. Check your exact date, because December has Sundays and holidays without departures.
