What a Washington bus tour from NYC is

It is a guided day trip in a shared coach or van: you board in Midtown Manhattan early in the morning, ride four to five hours south, tour Washington with a guide for about five hours, and ride back the same night. The whole day runs 14 to 15 hours. Transport, guide and route are handled for you; meals are not.

The operators on this site all work the same basic pattern, so what follows applies to most of them. Where one tour differs, it is named.

Where the coaches leave from

Almost every tour leaves Midtown, within a few blocks of Times Square. The corner of 7th Avenue and West 51st Street is the busiest pick-up point: the van or bus day trip and the Washington Highlights tour both leave from there at 6:00, 7:00 or 8:00 AM, and the day trip by bus meets nearby. The City Highlights tour boards at 330 West 42nd Street.

There are two exceptions. The Manhattan or New Jersey tour has a New Jersey departure at 6:00 AM, handy if your hotel is across the Hudson. The Washington and Philadelphia coach leaves the Times Square area at 5:00 AM.

There is no hotel pickup on any of these group tours. Check the subway schedule for your hour, or budget for a cab.

Coach or van: what you ride in

You ride in a bus or a van, and you usually find out on the day. The operators size the vehicle to that day’s bookings, so a busy summer Saturday might fill a full coach while a quiet weekday runs in vans of about 14 people. Guests on the day trip by bus often say the smaller group felt almost private.

The vehicle affects two things. Wi-Fi: the City Highlights tour lists it on buses only, not on vans, and the other listings do not promise it, so download maps and entertainment before you leave. Toilets: none of the listings here promises one on board, so treat the rest stops as your bathroom breaks.

The air conditioning can run cold, especially at the back of a coach. Bring a jacket or a fleece even in July.

The drive and the rest stops

The drive is about 225 miles each way and takes four to five hours, down the New Jersey Turnpike, over the Delaware Memorial Bridge and on through Baltimore. Tours break it with one stop in each direction.

On the way south that stop is breakfast: 30 minutes at the Delaware House Travel Plaza on the van or bus day trip and on City Highlights, 40 minutes in Maryland on Washington Highlights. On the way home it is shorter, 20 minutes for coffee in Delaware or at the Walt Whitman Travel Plaza in New Jersey. Some tours add a night-time stop for the Manhattan skyline, at Hamilton Park on Washington Highlights and in New Jersey on the Manhattan or New Jersey tour.

Traffic around New York and Baltimore is the one thing no guide controls. A slow morning shortens your time in Washington; the operators say so in their listings.

The rhythm of the day in Washington

Washington is on-and-off: short drives between stops, then 10 to 20 minutes on foot at each. Most tours cross the river first to Arlington National Cemetery for 45 minutes to an hour, usually walking to the Kennedy graves, with the Iwo Jima Memorial nearby. The group then works along the National Mall: the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, the Vietnam and Korean War memorials, and photo stops outside the White House and the U.S. Capitol. Neither building is entered.

The day usually ends with free time. That is 90 minutes on the National Mall for a Smithsonian museum on three of the tours, 75 minutes at the Air and Space Museum on City Highlights, and time at Union Station on the day trip by bus. Arlington checks photo ID at the gate for everyone 16 and over, and overseas visitors need their passport.

Food on board and luggage

Meals are never included. You buy breakfast at the rest stop and lunch in Washington, so carry some cash or a card. The day trip by bus does not allow eating inside the vehicle, so eat at the stops and keep snacks for the walks.

Travel light. The Manhattan or New Jersey tour does not take suitcases or large bags and may charge $10 per bag. The museum free-time tour has no room for luggage, large bags, bikes or mobility scooters, and Washington Highlights cannot carry scooters or electric wheelchairs. What time you get back

Plan on 14 to 15 hours after your departure time, which puts a 7:00 AM start back in Midtown at around 9:00 to 10:00 PM, later if traffic is bad. The drop-off is usually near Times Square, not at your hotel, and the Philadelphia coach finishes at Port Authority or Central Park West.

• Comfortable walking shoes, since the stops add up to several hours on foot
• A warm layer for the air conditioning
• Your passport if you are visiting from abroad, or US photo ID
• Water, snacks and a little cash for the rest stops and tips
• A phone charger or power bank
• Weather gear: the tours run rain or shine

A FlixBus, Megabus, Greyhound or Vamoose ticket costs roughly $20 to $50 each way and takes about four to five hours, the same as the coach tour. The difference is what happens at the other end.
