Choosing a Day Trip

Seven Day Trips, Tour by Tour

Where each one leaves from, how long it runs, what it covers and who it suits.

Quick picks

For a standard day at the lowest price here, book the guided day trip by van or bus. Choose by the one thing that matters most to you:

The group day trips side by side

All seven are shared tours that leave Manhattan in the early morning and bring you back the same night, with about five hours in Washington (less on the Philadelphia combination).

Tour by tour, and who each one suits

Each of these follows the same basic shape: a breakfast stop on the road south, a guided loop of Arlington and the National Mall, a stretch of free time, then the long drive back. The differences sit in the details below.

Van or bus day trip, $107

This is the one most people book. It leaves 7th Avenue and West 51st Street at your choice of 6:00, 7:00 or 8:00 AM, walks Arlington National Cemetery to the Kennedy graves, stops at the Iwo Jima Memorial, and ends with 90 minutes of free time on the National Mall. It suits first-time visitors who want the standard day at the lowest price here and a later start than 6:00 AM.

City Highlights, $123

The tour at the top of this page runs from 330 West 42nd Street with a guide in English and Spanish, or on the multilingual option in French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Japanese. Lunch is 75 minutes at the Air and Space Museum, so museum time and your meal share one slot. Buses have Wi-Fi; vans do not. It suits international visitors who would get more from the commentary in their own language.

Day trip by bus, $129

It has the highest rating here, 4.7 from more than 600 reviews, and several guests describe a group small enough to feel almost private. The day adds the Jefferson Memorial and Capitol Hill and ends with free time at Union Station, not a museum. Eating on board is not allowed. It suits travellers who care most about the guide and the reviews.

Washington Highlights, $108

Three morning departures, an hour on foot at Arlington, guided walks at the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean War memorials, and 90 minutes on the Mall. On the way home the coach stops at Hamilton Park in New Jersey for the Manhattan skyline after dark. It suits anyone who wants the museum slot with a solid review record behind it.

Manhattan or New Jersey, $129

The Washington DC in a Day tour is the choice if you are staying across the Hudson, since one option starts in New Jersey. It leaves at 6:00 AM and has the longest list of stops here, with the World War II and Martin Luther King Jr. memorials and an hour at Union Station for lunch. Large bags can cost $10 each.

Museum free-time tour, $114

This listing covers much the same ground as the $107 and $108 trips from the same corner, including 90 minutes of free time, and adds a drive through Georgetown. It has far fewer reviews (4.4 from 50), so it is a back-up when the bigger names are full on your date.

Washington and Philadelphia, $115

Two cities in 15 hours: about 2 hours 45 minutes of guided time in Washington, then about 1 hour 40 minutes in Philadelphia for the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and the Rocky Steps. It starts at 5:00 AM. It suits travellers who want both names ticked off more than a closer look at either. The Washington and Philadelphia page compares the options.

What no day trip includes

None of these tours goes inside the White House or the Capitol. Both are photo stops from outside; inside visits are booked separately and far in advance. Arlington requires valid photo ID for visitors 16 and over, and overseas visitors must carry their passport, so a national ID card will not get you in.

Traffic around New York and Baltimore can shorten your time in Washington, and the tours run in any weather. Our guide to choosing a day trip goes through these limits by traveller type, and the bus tour guide covers the coach itself: rest stops, food rules and what to bring.

When a group coach is not the answer

If a Smithsonian museum matters more than a memorial loop, or a 15-hour day sounds like too much, stay a night. The 2-day tour with Philadelphia and Amish Country costs $340 per person with a hotel near DC, and the 2-day trip page compares it with doing it yourself.

Groups of four or more, or anyone who wants a door-to-door pickup, should look at the private tours from NYC. And if you would rather set your own pace, the train reaches Union Station in about three to three and a half hours; train vs bus vs tour lays out the trade-offs, and Washington by train shows how to plan the day.
